Breast Cancer Awareness - Worth the Fuss.

I am going to be totally honest...I used to be slightly annoyed by all of the fuss surrounding breast cancer awareness. I found it overkill based on the fact that there are so many other types of cancer that are more deadly and less treatable. Yet, we seem to really focus on finding a cure for breast cancer, rather than cancer as a whole. As someone whose life has been touched by multiple types of cancer, I found it silly and frustrating.

On the 19th of January, my husband's aunt went to the doctor for what she thought was a really bad flu or virus. That day she found out she had an advanced form of breast cancer. She passed on the 26th, just one week after being diagnosed. She had never had a mammogram, and recent blood tests had missed any abnormalities. She was 52 years old.

My husband's maternal family has had a tough six months. His mother has lost 2 sisters and her mother to cancer in that short time. Each of them had a different type of cancer...colon, pancreatic, and breast. My father was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer 5 years ago, my husband's father had a cancererous tumor removed which was prostate cancer, my mother had a skin cancer scare (that was removed as well).

It seems to me, that the scary and unpredictable problem that is cancer, increases in its presence by the day. All you have to do is watch and awards show, or read an obituary to realize that the impact is extensive. More, and increasingly younger people are being personally affected by this horrific disease.

Today I am doing my best to change my thoughts about all the hoopla surrounding breast cancer awareness... in my mind, it has become not just a step towards finding a cure for breast cancer, but a way to cure that, and all cancers....
